I am praying so hard that you guys put up "Love With Teeth." I want SO much to discuss this with my mom's group, who saw me through the desperate misery that was my now 4 yo daughter.
I was, too, Joyce, and my kids aren't difficult at all. I was grateful to hear from a mom that was able to articulate the difficulty of that time without whining. It was an article that was long in coming. Bravo to her. Joyce, can you just photocopy it? Do you have the mag? I'd send you mine but I already gave it to my sister.
How is your daughter now? The author's son was still difficult.

Good article. I recently quit my job because we relocated from DC to Seattle for my husband's job. I am new to this place and new at being a stay-at-home mom with two boys (4 yrs. and 1-1/2 yrs. old). I loved what I did as an educator (teacher and school-based leader), but not sure there are many part-time opportunities in education. I want to be around my kids and be at home - I know being mom is a great job, but would like to be able to do some other work as well. Wish I knew how I could turn my passion for teaching/learning and coordinating events into a part-time business or consultation. I am not a crafty person nor do I cook well enough to turn it into a business. Any other similar moms out there reading this by chance?
To Marlyn, have you looked into tutoring students who cannot attend the regular high school for a medical or other reason? My mother has an Education degree and does that part time. She goes to hospitals, and students' homes.
In Ohio we have a number of on-line charter schools where educators can teach part-time. Also, I have been teaching as an adjunct at some universities that cater to the adult learner. That is a very nice experience.
Nice article, I also lost my job - ironically just as I was considering having children and what to do about the work situation. Of course, that project has been shelved until the recession has lifted. Here is my story about it, "Women, Work and Identity in a Time of Contraction."

I'd like to do something part time/creative that won't look like I've been out of the work force for an extended period, ideally. But at some point, you realize that even the best laid plans can turn in an instant. Stone seemed to argue a little relentlessly for the women working thing - I think another issue for families is just 'underconsuming' so that you know you can get by on 1 or 1.5 salaries if you need to. It's also scary to be financially depenent on having 2 salaries when you don't know when one of you may lose your job.
