One thing I didn't get to cover much in this story -- though it's something I think about every day -- is this: we're in the middle of a protracted war. In the run-up to next year's election, why aren't we hearing more from mothers and family members of soldiers, and from the soldiers themselves, both men and women?
I have some fairly strong feelings about the war (shouldn't have gotten in/let's get out) but I feel on this issue almost like it's not my place to comment. I'm not there fighting, my husband's not, my kids aren't.
I feel like I -- and maybe all of us -- should defer to the military families. But we hear so little from them, at least in the mainstream press and online, other than the awful and sad stories of injuries and deaths.
Where are the voices of the military moms? Is it just that they don't have time to get political? Or that they're as confused as the rest of us as to where their loyalties should lie? Or are they all solidly 100 percent behind our current course of action?
Um, sorry I don't overprotect my kids.
Fitness, yoga, botox, soccer (duh), apathy, selfish, out of touch with working class America, maniacal homemakers, and ever-so-slightly Botoxed... yup, that's me.
And I haven't voted the same ticket as Mr. Nim since, well, never.

While we're hoping for the military families to pipe up, I had a question.
Call me a nut job, but I never really considered that two partnered-up people would vote differently. (Not that I expect the ladies to follow suit, just that birds of a feather...) I'm just curious: how does that play out at home? Is it an agree-to-disagree thing? Or does family life get tense at election time?
I grew up that way! After my dad stopped running for Democratic office and started voting Republican, there were about 2 decades where he and my mother cancelled out each other's votes every single election, like clockwork. Then slowly slowly she went right herself.
Has anyone ever heard of an old(er) person suddenly leaning left?
Tracy: My father used to be a staunch Republican. About a year before the last election, however, he called me and apologized for criticizing my judgment of Bush, and he actually called him an idiot. I believe he has actually started leaning left, thank god.

I kid, mostly, though it is true that it seems difficult to maintain your liberalosity in the face of decades of mucking about. The Rs are just so noisy and sure of themselves in a afternoon radio kind of way, and the Ds are so...not that way.
In our town we do have a smattering of liberal-to-the-core oldster couples, and I love them for hanging tough all these years as everyone around them started to vote to protect their wallets, the rest of the world be damned.
